Permanent Cosmetics

Permanent cosmetics are a great way to save yourself time and money.  No need to spend hours applying makeup, or spend a ton of money buying make up and replacing it when it runs out.  Permanent cosmetics is a great way to look good all the time with little to no effort.

Permanent cosmetics can help enhance your appearance, and can also correct certain conditions. For those with little or no eyebrow hair, this procedure can provide more natural-looking results. Permanent cosmetics can also help cover up unsightly scars, and do not wash away, smudge, or fade in a few hours. The results can last for years.

Who is the best candidate for Permanent cosmetics?

Anyone who wants to:

  • Improve the appearance of thin or no eyebrows.
  • Improve the appearance of thin lips.
  • Correcting an uneven hairline.
  • Gain a boost in self-esteem.
  • Feel more confident.
  • Provide a solution for those allergic to makeup.
  • Save time and money on makeup.

There are many different options for Permanent Cosmetics.  At Renewal MD, the most popular areas are:
Eyebrows – this can benefit those with little, or no eyebrows. Permanent eyebrows can also help open up the eyes and change the frame of one’s face.

Eyelashes/Eyeliner – this provides a more natural look of fuller lashes. Permanent eyeliner can also help reshape the eye.

Lip color – adding permanent cosmetics can create more definition to the lip line. It can also help camouflage any lip scarring.

Areola- Permanent cosmetics can also be used after breast reconstruction surgery, to recreate an areola.

How are the Permanent Cosmetics applied?

Getting permanent cosmetics is very similar to getting a tattoo, however at Renewal MD, we are able to offer you highly skilled services in a clean and comfortable environment, under the care of our medical director, Nancy Richardson, MD.  In addition, because we are a medical facility, we are able to provide you with an extremely comfortable procedure, using topical numbing medications as well as anxiety medication, if so needed.

The first thing our medical aesthetician will do is put a topical numbing cream on the area.  Then, after it takes effect (usually around 30 minutes), she will begin the procedure.  The aesthetician uses a special tool to introduce the pigment into the middle layer of skin.  A follow-up treatment may be needed to adjust the shape, color, and intensity of the permanent cosmetic.

Is it painful?

As everyone’s pain tolerance is different, it is hard to say whether or not you will experience any discomfort from the procedure.  With the help of the topical anesthetic, most people feel a slight tingling, but do just fine and have minimal to no pain.  Rest assured that if you are not comfortable, we will stop the procedure and adjust your anesthetic so that you are.  If you have anxiety about the procedure, we are happy to talk with you about anxiety medications.

How much down time will I have?

Depending on the area, you may initially be swollen and red, but should be able to go about your normal daily routine immediately following the procedure.   We will give you a list of post-procedure instructions, which may include things like the use of ice to help minimize swelling and instructions to avoid direct sunlight for a few days following your procedure.

What are the risks?

As with any medical procedure where the skin is disrupted, permanent cosmetics also carry some degree of risk.  The most common risk is infection.  Fortunately, Renewal MD is able to minimize this risk by following strict procedures for a sterile environment.  Still, it will be very important that you do all you can to keep the treated areas clean and free from infection.

How permanent are permanent cosmetics?

The pigments used in permanent cosmetics are different than those used in traditional tattoos.  Over time, the pigments will fade, and may even disappear altogether.   You can increase the longevity and maintain your results by coming in for a touch up every 3-5 years and by limiting your sun exposure to the treated areas.

What are the costs?

During your consultation, our aesthetician will go over costs with you, as they vary depending on the area treated.  Although Permanent Cosmetics are considered a cosmetic treatment, insurances are likely to pay for permanent tattooing of the areola, if related to breast reconstructive surgery.
