Botox for Hyperhidrosis

Botox® Cosmetic has proven to be an effect way to keep yourself looking younger, but that is not its only use.  Botox is also a very effective way to treat a condition called Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, in areas such as the armpits, hands, or feet.  At Renewal MD, we use Botox to help treat Hyperhidrosis of the underarms.

Botox, when injected into the targeted areas of the underarm through tiny needles, goes to work on Hyperhidrosis in a similar manner to the way it remove wrinkles.  By effectively blocking key nerve endings,  Botox® can inactivate sweat glands and reduce excessive sweating by more than 50%. Botox® for Hyperhidrosis is not a permanent solution, but can offer patients temporary relief that can last up to nine months.   It is FDA-approved for this treatment.

What happens in this procedure?

Initially, our nurse injector will talk with you about what your concerns are and where you experience the majority of your sweating.  Next, the area is typically brushed with iodine and then with cornstarch powder.  The iodine and cornstarch combine to reveal purple “dots” that allow our nurse injector to see where your overactive sweat glands are (She then knows exactly where to place the injections.)

The injections are done with a very tiny needle, and, unlike the muscle injections for wrinkle prevention, these injections will just go right under the skin.  The Botox will spread out in the area, disabling the sweat glands.  The number of injections, the amount of time required, and the amount of Botox needed will depend on the size of the area being treated.  It typically takes about 30 minutes to treat both underarms.  Again, our injector nurse can give you a very good idea of what to expect.

What are the Side Effects and Recovery Time?

The most common side effect of Botox for Hyperhidrosis is tenderness at the injection site and muscle numbness, which might last a few days.  Some people do experience some bruising, particularly if they have been taking any blood thinners (eg. Aspirin or ibuprofen, or have been drinking alcohol before or after their procedure.)  You may wear deodorant the following day.

What does Botox for Hyperhidrosis cost?

Although it depends on how much is needed, the standard cost for this treatment is about $1,000.00.  This procedure may be covered by your insurance, and/or your employers flexible spending program, or Health Savings Account.  Although Renewal MD does not take insurance directly, we are happy to provide you with the insurance codes necessary to submit to your insurance carrier.
